NC DoT – Showing Support for Cycling

Bicycle enthusiasts across North Carolina can now show their support for bicycle and highway safety while bringing awareness to others by purchasing a Share the Road specialized license plate.

The plate, which features the “Share the Road” traffic sign, was approved by the NC General Assembly on July 11, 2005. The Division of Bicycle & Pedestrian Transportation receives $20 of the fees collected per plate to be used for bicycle education and safety initiatives.

Currently, the DBPT uses these funds to distribute helmets through its Bicycle Helmet Initiative

Plate Costs

There are two options when ordering the “Share the Road” license plate through the DMV. The standard plate costs $30 in addition to your regular renewal fee. A four digit designation is assigned in the order in which applications are received. The personalized “Share the Road” plate costs $60 in addition to your regular renewal fee. You may choose up to four letters or number/letter combination for this plate.
